This post is just a response to a poor choice of old propaganda posters. This is not meant to be critical of Ana Hoffman or her site, Traffic Generation Café. I do not know her stance on capitalism or if she is even aware of what this poster is about. — SIDE NOTE: If you visit Ana’s site, don’t stop at the poster. She has a lot of excellent information posted that I highly recommend you read, especially if you’re new to IM.
It depicts a pyramid scheme, not capitalism. Pyramid schemes are set up by individual people; not by entire economic systems.
Capitalism is a very level field. And, on that field, everyone has the same opportunities based on their own abilities, desires, imagination, talents, skills and free will. Capitalism is based on the freedom to start a business, to succeed or fail in that business and, if fail, to rework the same business or to start a new one.
Are you an entrepreneur? Do you do business (licensed/registered or not)? Do you collect a profit? Do you accept payment for any products or services that you provide. Do you have employees? Do you have non-profit or any other business status? Do you accept commissions for referring sales to other businesses? … If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then you are a capitalist.
Do you have an iPhone, PlayStation, an energy drink, etc.? Do you have a computer and Internet connection? Even if you do not have a computer, do you connect to the Internet? You are reading this, so you must. Then you support capitalism. All of these items are products of capitalism. The shoes on your feet are products of capitalism. Were it not for capitalism, you would have none of these things because, were it not for capitalism, they would not exist. (Well, moccasins would exists, but not your Reeboks.)
Through capitalism, you have the right to start your own business or to seek employment within someone else’s business. As an employee, you have a responsibility to work; you also still have the right to start your own business. As an employer, it is not my responsibility to start your business for you and I am not to blame for the choices that you make. Whether you start a business of your own, continue to work for me, or find employment with someone else is your choice.
That poster also fails to show that…
1) Those at the top started at the bottom (excluding inheritance, etc.) and
2) Those at the bottom have an opportunity to get to the top, whether in another’s business or by starting their own business.
Capitalism is an economic system, not a business model.
