A Few Thoughts on Running Your Own Membership Website

Categories: Free ServicesMembership Websites

If I say, “Create a membership site,” what is the first thing to cross your mind?  Probably something along the lines of, “Oh, no, I have to create a bunch of content,” right?

But there are a lot of different types of membership websites through which you do not have to create content.  In fact, your members will create the content for you!

Social networking websites, for example.  A safe assumption might be that 98% or more of a social network’s content is user generated.  And, with Boonex’s Dolphin, setting up a social networking site has never been easier.  But, if you plan on being successful with one of these high-trafficked websites, you need to prepare yourself for higher hosting costs.  In the beginning you should at least have a private IP address and SSL.  As your membership grows, you are going to need to spring for a dedicated server.

An article directory is another example of a membership website that you do not have to create content for.  Of course, you should create the first four or five articles to fill up the front page and get the site started.  No one wants to join a website that looks like no one else wants to join it, either 😉

There is a major choice to make before setting up a membership site: Free or Paid?

Obviously, if your only objective is to make money, your first instinct might be to create a paid membership website.  This is much different than a free site, in that the information on a paid site must either be exclusive to that site or, otherwise, very hard to come by.

If you are looking for something that is much easier to promote, you might prefer a free membership structure.  With a free membership website, you can make money by selling upgraded memberships, members-only ad spots or even by displaying affiliate banners.

If you would like to get started with your own membership site today, I am currently offering a free setup service for an article directory script.  This is just basic setup; no custom graphics are included.  You only need a domain name and hosting, which you can get really cheap at
